Dear readers,
Mr Mohammed Fikree Hakim Mohammed Salleh, a 26-year-old barista, has been struggling to pay off a credit card debt that snowballed when he lost his job in 2023.
But since being placed on the ComLink+ scheme, he is confident that he will be able to pay off the debt sooner, while still being able to set aside emergency funds for his family.
The scheme, introduced in October 2023, offers financial assistance to families who are taking steps towards long-term goals in four key areas: preschool education, employment, debt clearance and saving for home ownership.
There are around 11,000 families on the ComLink+ scheme, the Ministry of Social and Family Development said.
The scheme also offers personalised coaching to these families, which Mr Fikree said made a world of difference, as the coach helped link him up to the solutions and aid he needed.
Other interviewees similarly said their lives have improved markedly after being placed on ComLink+ scheme.
But structural challenges remain. For example, many face caregiving pressures that can make it hard to secure regular employment or ensure their children's consistent attendance in school.
As Singapore aims to build a kinder society, CNA TODAY takes a closer look at this key support initiative, and explores what more could be done to provide a more level playing field for all families.
Yours faithfully,
